Originally, we set up “Professional Architectural Drawing Services” with the intention of providing drawings for building warrants, planning consent, and project management, mainly in the residential property development market.

However, in light of the new volatility in the domestic market (the “credit crunch”), we restructured and we decided to move away from the domestic sector altogether.

North Glasgow College at Springburn

As Professional Architectural Drawing Services — we have been asked to provide on-site facilities for the new RMJM (Robert Matthew, Johnson Marshall)/ Greenroom M&E design for the new college at Springburn –

North Glasgow College.

2008-09 Edit:This was a difficult project for a great many reasons, probably the most important being the degree of business change.

For example, in May 2007, the main contractor, Barr Construction was taken over by McLaughlin & Harvey and the company restructured. This project was reprogrammed and restaffed. The next month — in June 2007 — the project architects, RMJM, merged with New York based Hillier Architecture, forming a 1200 person ‘super-studio’. RMJM restructured, and the design consultants for electrical and mechanical services, Greenroom Building Services, became a distinct entity. Later, in August 2008, Greenroom was sold off as a completely independant entity. The hundreds of radiators for the project were supplied by Quinn Radiators. In April 2008, this company closed a factory under a great deal of controversy with the unions, workforce and newspapers. See amicus the union.org.

Restructuring

We have decided upon a complete restructure for two reasons.

(a) New legislation and tax rules;

(b) Trouble in the financial markets seems imminent as a fall-out from the sub-prime mortgage problems over in the USA.

We have closed down Mitchell Contracts, and have decided to transfer the workload to our other subsidiary “Professional Architectural Drawing Services“.

Professional Architectural Drawing Services was originally set up to provide drawings, design services and project management to the domestic, residential property development sector. Professional Architectural Drawing Services will now focus on the professional sector, commercial, retail and business developments instead.

Our subsidiary, Mitchell Contracts Ltd., continue to work with Haden Young Scotland & Ireland Region on a variety of projects, including:

Dumfries & Galloway College (www.newbuild.dumgal.ac.uk/); and
Dumfries Leisure Centre.

Mitchell Contracts provided programs, charts, schematics, and 3D models for design development on these projects.

Schools

We also contributed to a number of PPP/ PFI new school builds, such as Niddrie Mills in Edinburgh, as well as a series of new builds for rural Scotland widely known as “Highland Schools”, and developed by Alpha Schools (Highland) Ltd — a consortium of Galliford Try Investments and Noble Fund Managers. Our main involvement was for setting up and developing co-ordinated M&E construction drawings for the following replacement High Schools:

Portree High (Skye);
Dingwall Academy (Rossshire); and
Millburn Academy (Inverness).

Quartermile – Haden Young

In December 2006, we set up a new subsidiary, Mitchell Contracts Ltd., exclusively to provide CAD services to Haden Young Ltd. Our workload got under way with the prestigious Quartermile project.

Master-planned by world-renowned architects Foster + Partners, it is so-called because it is a quarter mile from Edinburgh Castle, a quarter mile from the Royal Mile, and the site is a quarter mile from corner to corner.

We provided the complete O&M set of multi-service drawings and CAD models for this project.

Hospital Replacements

This is a straightforward month-long contract (our ref #70), starting immediately, and will be our fourth contract with BK (see our refs #65, #24 & #25).

New BBC HQ

The lead contractor for the new BBC HQ in Scotland, Balfour Kilpatrick, has approached us to act as lead co-ordinator for all services on this £18 million contract.

We are delighted to be part of the management team for this critically acclaimed development on the site of the old Pacific Quay in the Plantation district on the south bank of the Clyde, and for the opportunity to work with BK again (see our refs 24 & 25).

We expect co-ordination to start in earnest when the flexible design becomes fixed at the end of June 2005. This project (our ref #65) may therefore begin to stretch our resources in Q3 and possibly into Q4 if design changes are radical.

2006-01 Edit: We were involved in this project for a year; from Arup Scotland’s co-ordinated services designs delivered in July, Balfour Kilpatrick’s scope included principal heating and chilled water pipework installations.

Plumbing (CWS, MCWS, DHWS, rainwater, drainage), ductwork, underfloor heating, dry risers, controls etc were subcontracted. Contractor co-ordination was mainly with sprinklers and the electrical contractor (small power, containment, comms, data). In addition to our lead co-ordination role, we had responsibility in Q1 and Q2 for most of the complicated IT workarounds, (providing much of the equipment required to progress the contract). We devised and implemented all site procedures for document control and QA in conjunction with Bovis’s ‘Hummingbird’ on-line documentation system and Balfour Kilpatrick’s DDMS and Sharepoint documentation systems.

2006-03 Edit: This was a complex project in many ways and for many reasons, and we are delighted to have contributed to the project’s success.

Heathrow Terminal 5 Bid

Mitsui Babcock Energy Limited have asked us to head the team to put together their bid for the manufacture, storage and delivery of prefabricated modules for the £24m London Heathrow Airport (LHA) Terminal Five (T5) project to the AMEC Delivery Team.

We have a tight 3 month deadline for the bid. If MitsuiBabcock is successful (and the competition is fierce) the dcdevine consultancy would head the project management team for this extremely high profile and prestigious project. Terminal Five was designed in the early 1990s, but delayed by the longest public enquiry in history. Permission wasn’t granted until 2001. Preconstruction work is currently underway; a sewage works has to be relocated and the M25 revised amidst a very important archaeological site. Terminal Five alone is the size of many International airports, it is scheduled to be open in 2011.

The T5 Project is rather radical departure for Mitsui Babcock — who are an heavy engineering company operating in the thermal power, nuclear, petrochemical, oil & gas and pharmaceutical industries. Based in Renfrew, Scotland — for a century — the company employs 1000 people there and a further 3000 people in 150 countries. MBEL were invited to tender because of the Renfrew site’s storage capacity, and good transport links.

2003-09 Edit: Under our contract (ref 51), we were also specifically responsible for DFMA (manufacture and assembly design), Value Engineering input and advice, programme and planning input, and writing the entire Methodology Section of the submitted bid. The bid basis changed a number of times, as well as the deadlines: for example, the initial seven module types from Concourse A were increased to 13 types.

2003-10 Edit: When the bid was deemed unsuccessful, MBEL returned to core business and began a £5 million enterprise developing clean coal technology.

Sematek – Motorola

Motorola have just announced the closure of their South Queensferry facility. As a consequence of this, we have been invited by Sematek to take responsibility for a number of aspen tool transfers to Motorola’s East Kilbride FAB under a very strict EISS Audited working practice regime..

Our Project Designer role involves surveying the tool in situ at South Queensferry, and surveying the basement and FAB at East Kilbride before draughting and designing a fully co-ordinated hook-up workpack for each tool and for sub-contractor quotation, manufacturing and installation. This contract (ref. 50) is expected to take between 2 and 4 months to complete

2002-12 Edit: We dealt with three successful Aspen Tool transfers between August and November 2002.
