EMSTAR
December 1, 1989
We are delighted to announce that we have won a contract with Energy Management Services Technology and Resources Limited, (E.M.S.T.A.R. Limited) who are part of the Royal Dutch Shell Group, and based in Cadogan Street in Glasgow City.
We plan to start at the beginning of December to get some lead-in time so we can ‘hit the floor running’ at the beginning of 1990 after the holidays. We are to provide all engineering drawings and tehcnical graphics required for all projects — drawings and graphics for proposal and presentations, for installation and record drawings.
EMSTAR is a firm of Energy consulting engineers and building management contractors with a different approach to building services; the company BUYS boilerhouses and plantrooms, throws everything away, installs the latest and most reliable and efficient equipment, monitors it all remotely using a BEMS system, and pays all the capital and running costs. Their clients are tied in to a scheme paying a regular amount — and after about 10 years, EMSTAR will begin to reap the profits.

1992-11 Edit: From late 1989 to mid 1992 we worked with their design and operations teams on Building Management Systems (BMS) and plant modifications for various projects including:
- In 1989, William Collins Sons & Co Ltd merged with Harper & Row, publishers of New York, USA, to form HarperCollinsPublishers, and in 1990 became wholly owned by News Corporation, retaining the large factory and head offices at Bishopbriggs, Glasgow, employing about 500 people.Paper dries out air and — like flour — a random spark can create a massive explosion. Our job was to make sure the air was sufficiently humid by spraying water from a sparge system at high level.The system was closely and remotely monitored.

- Dumfries & Galloway College of Technology (DAGCOT).
EMSTAR bought out their boilerhouse, refitted all the equipment and installed a BEMS system remotely controlling and monitoring the installation from the Cadogan Street offices.

- Hoover factory in Cambuslang, where EMSTAR purchased the plantrooms and boilerhouses and refitted everything with the latest and most energy-efficient — and controlled it all remotely using BEMS, with Hoover contracted into a monthly payment scheme, and EMSTAR owning and maintaining the equipment, and paying all the bills. the pay-back period — merely due to control and efficiency was ten-years;

- Napier College in Edinburgh — where we were responsible for preventing air-borne pollination from the internal genetically modified experimental lab plants with the natural plants outside of the College buildings. This involved elaborate methods of ingress and egress — gowning procedures, air-locks, air showers, air curtains, maintaining a negative static pressure, strict monitoring and contingency back-up planning — and intricate filtration.

We contributed to Glasgow College Enterprises Limited development (design), and a great many Institute of Energy/ EMSTAR Limited studies and reports, including audio-visual, artwork, lettering, photography, renderings, overheads and overlays for E.E.C. Commission on Energy conferences.
We enjoyed a very successful partnership with EMSTAR over several years in the early 1990s, until the company relocated.
2006-09 Edit: The company was sold by Shell and is now known as AHS EMSTAR plc.
Dumfries & Galloway College of Technology changed its name to Dumfries and Galloway College under an Act of Parliament in 1994.
